Mary Spanos: Hi! I am Mary Spanos and I live in Alabaster, Alabama. My mother taught me to knit when I was four and Pia Cusick taught me to spin in my twenties. Textiles are important to me. I started writing articles for Spin Off magazine in the early 1990s while working as a software developer. Then I left the computer world and became a tech editor and later the associate editor of Spin Off. Then I left that to go back to school (the University of Alabama) to study prehistoric textiles as a graduate student in anthropology and have worked as a textile anthropologist specializing in the prehistoric and early historic textiles of the southeast region of North America. I have early textile recreations on display at the Delchamps Archaeology Museum at the University of South Alabama, the Alabama Department of Archives and History and the Tennessee State Museum. Health issues encouraged early retirement, so now I spin, knit, weave, crochet, read, and nap. Retirement is pretty great.
